(10/27-10/28) Since the winds have somewhat dissipated, we have left Ibiza for an overnight passage (maybe this will FINALLY be my last), sailing to Cartagena. The dreaded passage was not as bad as anticipated, the sea swells calming as the day wore on, and our night was guided by another full moon.
(10/28-10/30) Cartagena is a city port, complete with a walled Old Town, founded in the 16th century. Located by the sea, the town is filled with squares, smooth tile-like cobblestone streets, many churches, and colorful colonial buildings. In keeping with the European ways, the outdoor cafes, now lit with fireplaces, close then reopen later in the evening for dinner. One thing I did learn about the food in Europe is that your recipe take on something is not necessarily the same as theirs. I ordered grilled scallops one evening; they were served in individual shells topped with fish eggs. Interesting presentation, nice flavor.
The weather has become noticeably cooler quickly, sunsets now nearer to 6:30 PM. We were somewhat prepared for the changing temperatures, so a little shopping did the trick. In fact, costumed folks and kiddos were energetically moving about the decorated squares trick-or-treating this Halloween weekend!
