We have returned to Ischia after last year’s fiasco of fierce squalls and rain and are pleasantly surprised with all the town has to offer. Ischia, known as the Green Island, is a volcanic island with a lush countryside in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. Its beaches offer hot springs, Roman remains, and views to the stunning Aragonese Castle. This medieval structure is linked to Ischia by a long 220m stone bridge.
And, of course, the food is amazing! I am looking forward to splurging with an “affogato” later in our stay. We have found the food in all of Europe to be extremely fresh; there have been feathers in our egg cartons and mushrooms still attached to muddy roots. The fresh fish, with a pistachio crust, served over pureed eggplant is excellent. Rich eats pasta almost daily and has already moved his belt down two notches! With all Ischia has to offer, it is certainly one of the most idyllic islands in Italy.
Happy birthday, Gracie (05/27)!!
(05/28) Finally! Basking in the warmer temperatures, we took advantage of the day to explore the Aragon castle of Ischia. Unbelievable, to say the least. It amazes us the way the natives have carved into the countryside to their advantage. Nothing is wasted. The original castle has undergone several changes since built in 474 B.C., has housed everyone from prisoners to nuns, and presently is still under renovation. The views overlooking the island from the castle are sensational and the walks through the castle landscapes are breathtaking, offering gardens of lemons, grapes and olive vines, figs, pomegranates, and carobs.
