Our sights are set on the town of Cefalu, a coastal town in northern Sicily. The village is known for the Norman Cathedral, a Byzantine 12th century fortress-like structure with towers and mosaics. There are also ancient ruins, a hilltop castle (La Rocca), and sandy rather than pebbly beaches. Cefalu is popular with Sicilians, mainland Italians, and international visitors. Supposedly, there is excellent dining here; we’ll be the judge of that!
While sailing, it was interesting to notice the changing color variations of the water. Sometimes the water is a dark blue ink, other times it seems grey, and in even other glances, it’s a sea foam green. We have not seen many flying fish, dolphins, or other sea creatures besides the jelly fish. Darkness is slowly seeping its way into our days early and earlier, embracing you fully by 7:15 PM.
(09/26) It has been raining intermittently during our travels and we luckily arrived at the marina in Cefalu in the sunshine, beating the forecast-ed rainstorms. The predicted showers did appear, sadly placing a hold on sight-seeing adventures.
(09/27) Off to explore Cefalu! One highlight of the day was Rich’s haircut with a real barber. I have been cutting his hair it seems forever, we cannot remember the last time someone else did it! And they did a fabulous job; cut, wash, trim, mist with cologne; a true Italian! We also enjoyed excellent pizza at a beach-side bar. Thin crusted, a bit sweet, a film of sauce, not overloaded with heavy toppings, it is the best we’ve had lately!
(09/28) Our next stop will be Palermo, Italy.
