(02/05-06) As we continued island hopping, our next stop was in Dominica. Rainy, overcast weather, with choppy waters and a general “bad feel” made it our decision to spend only one night in the area.
(02/06-02/11) Martinique, with its vibrant green mountainsides, crystal-clear water, and alluring white sandy beaches, was our next adventure. Martinique is unique in itself because of its blend of Caribbean and European influences. These influences are most noticeable in the mouth watering cuisine, the music, and the language. Hardly anyone speaks English and the dialect of French is one we had not heard. The island is known for its world-renowned rum, fascinating monuments, lush rain forests, and was the home to Josephine, Empress of the French, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Highlights on our trip were visits to the beach of Sainte-Anne and the town of Saint-Pierre (known as the Paris of the Caribbean), walking the black beaches, exploring the farmer’s markets, and sailing by the beautiful landscape of Le Carbet.
