Trains, planes, and Antibes, 4/24-4/25, 2023

The Alps, we think, with snow, on the way to Antibes.

So, one of my favorite things in Europe to see, and hear, are the trains whizzing by on their way to their next stop; especially when going over a bridge! On our way to Antibes, besides seeing the snow covered Alpes, we have noticed lots of trains and planes, both probably going to Nice. Another neat piece of scenery while sailing was viewing “Millionaires Row.” This neighborhood boosts gigantic homes, on large plots of land, complete with a stone wall built to surround all the homes; kind of like a fortress. There is an impressive pedestrian walkway on the outside of the wall. Rumor has it that, Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch, owns a home there. No telling who he is! Rich equates this area to the “Gold Coast” in Long Island. BTW – great Nelson DeMille book!!

Visiting the seaside town of Antibes has been a pleasure! Like in St. Tropez and Cannes, everyone here eats mussels with french fries, drinks Coca-Cola (the original, not diet), smokes, and sips on an Aperol Spritz. Other food favorites are gelato and Nutella. The town, itself, is calm and much less expensive than the other old fishing villages. Steeped in history as well, we walked the cobblestone streets, visited a farmer’s market, toured the Picasso Museum and churches, and dined on the local fare. Overall, the atmosphere is very low-keyed, subtle, and most enjoyable.

For lunch, Rich had a calzone that was stuffed with meats, cheese, mushrooms, olives, and even eggs! I had eggplant parmigiana served over salad. We could have licked the dishes clean. I will admit, I splurged with Prosecco, toasting one of our daughters, Katie, who is now engaged (4/20) to wonderful TJ Hart! We are thrilled for them both! I don’t know who is happier…Katie or Richard!! Incidentally, Rich has told me it is a good thing I am away or I would be driving Katie insane. Yes, my Google spreadsheet, as well as Katie’s, are in full sharing mode!!

I think this is our favorite beach-side, fishing village so far!!
